Pneumatic components structure a compressed air installation into three layers: generation and conditioning (compressor, dryer, FRL), distribution (pipework, isolation valves, solenoid valves), and actuation (cylinders, air motors, vacuum cups).
Pneumatic cylinders are designed around several standards. ISO 15552 (bores 32 to 320 mm, universalised mounting) remains the dominant standard for heavy-duty industrial cylinders. ISO 21287 standardises compact short-stroke cylinders, saving space on packaging machines. Mini-cylinder profiles (CDQ, CMA) cover very small formats (12 to 25 mm bore) for precise positioning.
Valves direct air to the cylinders. Designation conventions: number of ports / number of positions. 3/2 NC (3 ports, 2 positions, closed at rest) to operate a single-acting cylinder. 5/2 (5 ports, 2 positions, monostable or bistable) for a double-acting cylinder — the most common. 5/3 (5 ports, 3 positions) for a centred intermediate position (interrupted stroke, open, or bilateral pressure).
Valve actuation is either direct pneumatic (compressed air signal) or electric at standard 24 VDC. Manual controls (push button, lever, foot pedal) remain in service on simple machines or for adjustment functions.
The FRL unit at the installation inlet conditions the air: filtration to 5 µm minimum (40 µm for high flow rates), regulation to ±0.1 bar, optional lubrication (only for manual or very old tooling — modern components do not tolerate oil mist).
Push-in fittings with polyurethane tubing from 4 to 12 mm cover the bulk of installations. For high pressures (> 10 bar) or steel tubing, threaded BSP/NPT fittings are required. Simple solenoid valves (3/2 or 5/2) handle ON/OFF functions; proportional valves are used for precise flow or pressure regulation.
