The linear ball bushing is the simplest and most economical linear guidance system. It consists of a cylindrical housing containing rows of balls circulating in oval tracks — one loaded row and one free row that returns the balls in a closed circuit.
Four main formats dominate. The standard LM bushing (with a standardised outside diameter for insertion into a bearing or machined housing) remains the reference format. The closed LMK bushing, with a base and mounting holes, fits directly onto a frame. The open LMUK bushing (with a longitudinal slot) is used when the shaft rests on a continuous shaft support — the bushing passes over the support. The flanged LMF bushing incorporates a circular mounting flange.
The extremely low coefficient of friction (μ ≈ 0.002) enables movement with very little effort, ideal for manual applications or lightly loaded axes. The dynamic load capacity remains modest compared with rail-based guides — typically a few hundred N to a few kN depending on size.
The shaft must be class h6 minimum, ground and hardened to HRC 58 minimum. Lithium grease covers standard requirements; for high speeds (> 1 m/s) or contaminated environments, fit reinforced seals and provide lubrication via a grease nipple.
Variants for imperial shafts (1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1") are available on request for legacy applications based on the American standard.
