The plain bearing (sliding bearing, bushing) is the alternative to rolling-element bearings for the rotational guidance of a shaft. The sliding contact between the shaft and the inner surface of the bushing replaces rolling, which eliminates rolling elements, cages and seals — resulting in minimal space requirements, shock resistance and tolerance to contamination.
Several technologies coexist. Self-lubricating sintered bronze bushings (DIN ISO 4379, standard range) are manufactured by compression and sintering of bronze powder, producing a 20% porous structure, then impregnated with oil. Friction gradually releases the oil into the contact zone, providing maintenance-free lifetime lubrication over several thousand hours.
Steel-bronze-PTFE composite bushings (DU, DX, KX depending on the manufacturer's designation) combine a steel layer for rigidity, an intermediate layer of sintered porous bronze for lubricant retention and thermal dissipation, and a surface layer of filled PTFE for low friction (μ ≈ 0.03 dry). Very high load capacity, longer service life than bronze alone.
Engineering polymer bushings (POM, PA66, PEEK, polyimide) offer light weight, chemical resistance and food-grade compatibility. Moderate loads and limited speeds.
Operating conditions (linear speed in m/s, pressure in MPa, PV value) determine the choice. PV = P × V: the pressure × velocity product is the central sizing parameter. Sintered bronze tolerates PV ≈ 1.8 N/mm² · m/s; a DU reaches 3.5; PEEK 1.5 but at very high temperature.
For bearings requiring greasing, solid CuSn8 bronze bushings (DIN EN 12420) with grease grooves remain the reference in heavy-duty service.
