Mechanical seals for pumps

Mechanical seals replace the stuffing box on industrial pumps. Sealing is achieved through contact between two precision-lapped flat faces (silicon carbide, carbon, ceramic). Variants include single-acting, double-acting and ready-to-fit cartridge type. Standards EN 12756 (formerly DIN 24960).

About Mechanical Seals

The mechanical seal is the reference sealing system for centrifugal pumps, agitators and industrial compressors. Its principle: two highly precise flat faces (roughness < 0.1 µm) — one stationary, the other rotating with the shaft — are held in contact by a spring and the operating pressure. A microscopic liquid film (1 µm) lubricates the contact, prevents direct friction and ensures sealing.

Common material pairings include: silicon carbide SSiC / SSiC for abrasive fluids and aggressive chemicals (universal high-performance pairing); SSiC / Resin Carbon for resistance to thermal expansion and dilution; Ceramic / Carbon for standard low-cost applications; Tungsten Carbide / Carbon for resistance to shocks and particles.

Single-acting variants (single mechanical seal) are sufficient when the pumped fluid is compatible with a small tolerated leakage to the exterior. Double-acting variants (double mechanical seal) with an intermediate barrier liquid are essential for hazardous fluids (acids, solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons) or zero-emission requirements.

Cartridge seals are factory-preset assemblies, supplied with centring rings and shims: on-site fitting in just a few minutes, with no adjustment required. The reference format for new pumps and rapid maintenance.

The EN 12756 standard (formerly DIN 24960) standardises housing dimensions for interchangeability between manufacturers: lengths L1 K and L1 N in particular. Main brands: John Crane, EagleBurgmann, AESSEAL, Flowserve, ANGA.
